The week is of meeting people, of drinking with people, and sometimes it is of people going seperate ways. It is with fond memories that you look back at how people have contributed to your life and hopefully you add something to theirs. Hugh will be one person that will be such a memory to me. The one that brought Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan to the front of my conscience. He was a good friend who came from the East and Conquered the West, and now is off to the "Centre of the Universe". Good tidings to him and in your honor a poem.
Ad Perpetuam Memoriam
Tis not in the mid that you find God in a Man
Tis only in the Heart that you see the brightest Sun
With quiet words of compossure and kindness
Does one shape the multitude, one after one
And when his heart did brighten and bloom
The words did engulf the room
Not only verses of joy, but sorrow and wisdom too
The words of God, from heart to lips, always truth
Character, strength and perserverance through the storm
To be a beacon once he reaches the distant shore
To Hugh Leonard - ad astra per aspera -To the stars though difficulties
We said goodbye to a dear old friend And we packed our bags and left feeling sad It's the only way We said hello as we turned the key A new roof over our heads Gave a smile It's the only way Only way
Turn your head And don't look back Set your sails for a new horizon Don't turn around don't look down Oh there's life across the tracks And you know it's really not surprising It gets better when you get there oh
Well it really don't matter much where you are Cos home is in your heart It's a feeling that you wake with one day Some people key p running all their life And still find they haven't gone too far They don't see it's the feeling inside - the feeling inside oh
Turn your head and don't look back Just set your sails for a new horizon Don't turn around don't look down Oh there's life across the tracks And you know it's really not surprising It gets better when you get there
We said hello as we turned the key A new roof over our heads Gave a smile - it's the only way
